- Trust vs. Basic Mistrust (Birth to 1 year)
Learning trust. Exploring the world around them. Learning they are separate from the world.
- Autonomy vs. Doubt (1 to 2 years)
Understanding “no”. Learning to make choices. Learning cooperation with others. Realization of security when reasonable restrictions are in place.
- Initiative vs. Guilt (2 to 6 years)
Conscience formation. Initiation of relationships/activities for themselves. Dangers of violence and sex, even in daytime programming and commercials, is recognizable.
- Industry vs. Inferiority (6 to 12 years)
Involved more in the world, personal development, development of interests (sports, dance, music, reading, nature, etc)
- Identity vs. Role Confusion (12 to 18 years) *Ideal time to answer questions and talk with your child about sex.
Unstable social life, forming adult identity, forming new sense of sexuality, identity with and imitate heroes and heroines, shy, body-conscious, search for love and acceptance.
- Intimacy vs. Isolationism (19 to 40 years)
Developing a sense of meaning, thinking about goals in their life, analyzing their own values system/moral identity, feeling valued by members of the opposite sex for who they are through dating and abstinence. Moral identity being formed- think of themselves as bad if engaging in promiscuous behavior, respond to challenges of high standards and ideals by identifying themselves as good, moral, idealistic people.
- Generativity vs. Stagnation (40 to 65 years)
Need to give of themselves. Understand and desire to share talents. Has formed an identity and has deeper connection to their faith.
- Integrity vs. Despair (65 years to death)
Achieves a sense of who we are in relationship to God’s plan, and reflect on fulfillment of that identity through the years.
